A Pregnant Courtesan for the Rake by Diane Gaston

The third book in the Society of Wicked Gentlemen miniseries is about a man who has felt little love in his life and has doubts of ever experiencing it. When his path crosses with a woman who actually has him feeling at ease, their futures become unexpectedly entangled and both lives are never the same. Diane Gaston makes her main couple very interesting, and I immediately became concerned for the well-being of these two lonely individuals. A PREGNANT COURTESAN FOR THE RAKE is engagingly believable with realistic circumstances. I really felt as though each scene could have taken place during this period in history.

Since Oliver Gregory is part owner of a club in London which caters to gentlemen, he has traveled to Paris in order to check out similar establishments in that city and get some new ideas. He and three other men started the club as a way to give people a place where various pleasures could be enjoyed with anonymity. During his trip, Oliver meets an Englishwoman, Cecilia Lockhart, and the two have a wonderful chat plus spend an even more gratifying night together.

When Oliver leaves Paris the next day, he never expected to see the enticing Cecilia again. But after she shows up in London, he is completely stunned, especially upon learning her news about carrying his child. Though being a father and having a wife were not something Oliver thought would happen to him, he comes to realize after spending time with her that there is no way he will let Cecilia go through this situation alone.

There is a clever concept behind the Society of Wicked Gentlemen miniseries, and the installment by Diane Gaston adds many new aspects to the storyline. With the author putting in relevant information about the previous connected books, this story can be thoroughly enjoyed on its own. There are numerous references to actual people, places, and events, and these facts cause any happenings to come across as more convincing. Ms. Gaston makes her Regency story very colorful, and I particularly liked reading about all the delicious foods and drinks of the era. The author has also included several much-loved activities from that time.

A PREGNANT COURTESAN FOR THE RAKE has emotional heartrending moments. Although the backgrounds of Cecilia and Oliver are vastly different, both have been treated unfairly and now feel dejected. I really got a sense of how much the past affected these two, and their journey to possible happiness has lots of obstacles. Whether it was doubts about their relationship or interference from outside forces, I quickly became caught up in not only what was occurring but also what would be the consequences. The choices Oliver and Cecilia must sometimes make are extremely hard, and it was often nerve-wracking to wait on their decisions because of the effect it would have on their relationship. Ms. Gaston definitely kept me entertained the whole time I was reading.

I voluntarily read the book and all comments are my honest opinion
