Tank by Zoe Dawson

In the fourth book of the SEAL Team Alpha series, the stakes are frequently high and outcomes are never guaranteed. From dangerous missions to troubling situations, I became caught up in the lives of two individuals who do much for others but often fail to do what is best for themselves. Thorn “Tank” Hunt and Dr. Alyssa St. James are dedicated to helping people and even animals in need, and this repeatedly puts them in circumstances where they can be hurt in various ways. Sometimes the threat is physical, while other events only cause emotional suffering. But regardless of what is occurring, the superb writing of Zoe Dawson let me experience what Tank and Alyssa were feeling to the fullest, always getting a sense of realism in any happening. TANK is a military-themed romance at its very best.

Since Thorn “Tank” Hunt is a Navy SEAL and has a dog that works alongside him, he knows how important these loyal animals can be to a mission. So assisting local veterinarian Dr. Alyssa St. James who specializes in military working dogs was an easy decision. What is difficult for him is the effect the Army reservist has on him when they are together. Alyssa is also very aware of Tank as a man, but knows nothing can ever come of the attraction because of their military careers.

When an incident during a mission results in Tank losing Echo as his canine partner, he is upset but knows he has to move forward for his team. While training with his new dog, the SEAL comes in contact with Alyssa once again. The way each feels for the other is even more overwhelming this time, making Tank and the veterinarian want to explore what is between them. Yet both realize there are probably too many obstacles that will keep their relationship from lasting.

A vast array of sentiments was felt by me while reading TANK. The camaraderie of Tank and the SEALs on his team always made me smile when they good-humoredly bicker back and forth, and some of their truly priceless comments caused a big laugh. Then there are the occasions where these alpha men are surprisingly sentimental, and I felt a soft spot for that particular person. When Tank and Alyssa converse, their discussions ranged from intimately sensual to life-changing. What these two go through during the story really touched me at times, as heartbreaking situations arise along with honest revelations. Zoe Dawson knows how to draw the reader into every compelling moment, keeping your attention on every page.

TANK is equally thrilling with dangerous adventures and heartfelt emotions. Whether a scene was comprised of risky peril or a candid conversation, it came across are extremely true-to-life and had me believing. Since I am a dog lover, the times when a dependable canine was involved was so enjoyable, especially since the author made these instances seem very accurate. There is a storyline in the book which carries over to the next release, and I am exceedingly eager to learn what happens.

Appalachian Prey by Debbie Herbert

Realistic with true-to-life characters and an original premise, APPALACHIAN PREY grabs the attention and never lets go. I was immediately captivated by how genuine the setting plus people were at all times. Debbie Herbert certainly makes the Appalachian locale come across as very credible, and the manner in which several individuals were determined to do things their way also seemed to fit their personalities. The author had me believing in every situation that arose, regardless of whether the event was filled with danger or only expressing emotional concerns. APPALACHIAN PREY is one of the best Harlequin Intrigue stories I have read in a very long time.

Though Lilah Tedder had not lived on Lavender Mountain for twelve years, she still vividly remembers growing up poor and being ridiculed because of her family’s reputation. After a visit three months earlier, she had not intended to return again so soon. But the recent murder of her father has brought her back to the Appalachian Mountains in Georgia to settle his estate.

On her last trip to the area, Lilah had hooked up with Harlan Sampson, a local deputy. She thought there was something special between them, but his actions proved otherwise. When she finds herself pregnant several months later, she was just going to keep the information to herself because she realized Harlan would never want to be in a permanent relationship with her. Yet when he learns of how much danger Lilah is in, neither her protests or the comments of other people will stop him from watching out for her.

There is the mystery of who killed Lilah’s father at the start of the story, and the number of unknowns continues to rise. Clues about who could be responsible for the killing and why can be found throughout the book, and I kept changing my mind about possible motives. When other questions crop up later on, I was even more uncertain about what secrets were being hidden on Lavender Mountain. Debbie Herbert expertly kept me in suspense as the story played out and answers were finally revealed.

The relationship of Harlan and Lilah is not at all typical, and these two have so many challenges to overcome. From outside influences and opinions to their own perceived thoughts, it did not seem as though there was any way they could ever end up together. So I eagerly kept reading to discover what hurdle they would face next. I really liked Harlan and Lilah, as both are truly nice people trying to do what is best for themselves plus those for whom they care. But many residents in the community have formed their own ideas, and nothing will change their minds. I really felt for Lilah on so many occasions, and I hurt right along with her. Harlan had to dig deep within himself for how his future will turn out, and I anxiously waited for his decision. This is the first book about fascinating people living in Appalachia, and I cannot wait to read the second book.

Killer Colton Christmas by Regan Black and Lara Lacombe

The romantic couples who have been in the previous books of the Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity has gone through numerous trials and experienced conflicted feelings, and the final two stories are no exception. Regan Black and Lara Lacombe have imagined risky situations for their main characters to face, where lives are on the line and heartfelt entanglements are frequent. Several new people are introduced while past characters make a return, and each one had important roles. The ongoing plot about Livia Colton always left some details unanswered in the prior books, and I now have all the facts. KILLER COLTON CHRISTMAS is emotional plus filled with unanticipated danger.

Special Agent Cowboy by Regan Black

Since her background history was seldom encouraging, Marie Meyers is thankful for all Colton, Incorporated has done to make her life better. Working as its digital officer, she tries to ensure that any news related to criminal Livia Colton does not negatively affect the company. When a group known for hacking makes the business its next victim, her own personal information appears to be targeted more than most. The FBI is called in to stop the leak of data, and Emiliano Ortega is assigned to watch over Marie because the severity of the threats keep mounting. Hiding the fascinating woman on his ranch located in Shadow Creek is the plan, but becoming emotionally involved certainly was not.

As evidence is gathered connected to the hacking case, Marie could either be a victim or perpetrator. Regan Black makes the story interesting as clues are gathered along with motives. Marie and Emiliano are opposites in many ways, yet these differences seem to draw them together and form an emotional bond. To discover what is actually going on, a big risk must be taken, where feelings and duty collide. I never knew what would happen next. Special Agent Cowboy builds suspense with intriguing and unexpected circumstances.

The Marine’s Christmas Case by Lara Lacombe

Although Dario Ortega would like to know Felicity Grant better, it seems the newly returned resident of Shadow Creek is not interested in the same thing. But when the private investigator needs assistance to uncover the person responsible for hacking into Colton, Incorporated, his technical knowledge is very much appreciated. As a former marine, Felicity has the drive to prove she can be successful at her new career, and she is willing to accept Dario’s help to solve the case. Yet to find the answers, the couple must spend many hours researching, and surprisingly some of it is spent thinking about each other.

In the concluding book about Livia Colton, a number of unforeseen truths are finally exposed. I was kept guessing until the very end, and enjoyed looking out for any cleverly placed clues. Dario and Felicity are really likable, and I wondered if they would be willing to take a chance with their hearts. These two did not see their lives going toward the same goal, so it was fun watching them come to several stunning revelations. The Marine’s Christmas Case has engaging conversations and plenty of honest reactions. Lara Lacombe has created compelling situations for her particularly appealing couple to deal with, and the continuity came to a satisfying finish in this entertaining story.

Black Ops Warrior by Amelia Autin

While I have thoroughly enjoyed all the Man on a Mission stories, there was something about the hero of the tenth book that made him a favorite. Niall Jones is a dedicated agent whose work has him telling untruths and pretending. But when he interacts with Dr. Savannah Whitman, keeping his emotions from becoming involved is one of the hardest things he has ever done. As days go by and these two become more connected, the couple must ask themselves what is most important for future happiness and are they willing to try and make it happen. I immediately became caught up in the clever plot, and whether a scene contained threats or was only emotional, my captivation increased. BLACK OPS WARRIOR is engagingly imaginative because Amelia Autin has a talent for creating believable developments, where the reaction of characters is backed by genuine feelings and the circumstances are convincingly depicted.

For his latest undercover mission, Niall Jones is intently watching a woman who might become a traitor to the country that he has sworn to protect. Her previous job working with a defense contractor has left Dr. Savannah Whitman privy to sensitive government information, and there are corrupt individuals who would really like access to these facts. Now it is up to Niall to follow her around China while she sightsees, making certain nothing she knows is passed on to someone else.

Since Niall is trained to be aware of even the smallest detail, he cannot keep from noticing various personal aspects pertaining to Savannah yet wishes he did not. When he makes contact with her, it is to gain her trust and perhaps get some pertinent disclosures from her. But when it becomes apparent that the data she knows is wanted by an undetermined faction, Niall must remain close to Savannah or the critical material and even her life could be at risk.

Much of the story takes place in China, and Amelia Autin certainly took me on a colorful trip around this country. As Savannah and Niall take in the sights, I also got to “see” the many unique wonders that can only be found there. When it comes to the mystery of what individuals were actually carrying out the unlawful orders, the author kept me in the dark for most of the story. Subtle clues are given, yet just when I thought all was figured out, something would occur and change my mind. I like when not everything is known until the story almost concludes. The suspense definitely kept building with each new threat, and I never knew when something perilous would crop up. BLACK OPS WARRIOR skillfully balances the danger with emotional conflicts.

The relationship of Savannah and Niall is very complicated. He is undercover and must keep many secrets, while she is openly honest. The more time they spend together, the more guilt he feels, but duty forces him to remain silent. I felt how much it pained him when he could not tell her the truth, as he has quite a few inner discussions with himself. He is such an honorable man in all ways, and Savannah is just principled. When these two are intimate, the encounters are steamy yet also caringly tender. I had a wonderful time watching this couple discover so many new things about each other plus themselves.

The Billionaire’s Colton Threat by Geri Krotow

The ongoing uncertainty of whether Livia Colton is alive or not continues to haunt residents in the close-knit community of Shadow Creek. Often this criminal targets her own family members, but on other occasions, the threatened person is someone living in the area. In this installment of the Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity, two individuals who are not related to the ruthless criminal are threatened by an unidentified person, and uncovering the answers as to why they are being hassled or who is actually responsible is not easy. Geri Krotow has created an imaginative story where doubts are raised and danger continuously builds. Any initial clues only hinted at what was happening, thus keeping me guessing until each crucial detail was revealed. THE BILLIONAIRE’S COLTON THREAT is equally emotional and suspenseful.

After the death of her father, the life of Halle Ford quickly changed. She went from working as a CPA in Austin to managing Bluewood Ranch. Unfortunately, the place where she grew up in Shadow Creek, Texas has not been profitable lately, but she hopes to turn things around. When she gets a client willing to pay more than normal for an overnight trail tour, Halle is thankful for the extra money. Alastair Buchanan is from Scotland, and the billionaire is thinking about investing in a local company, so he is interested in learning about the area.

A successful whiskey business started by his family made Alastair rich, and his own shrewd investments have added to his wealth. Going on a tour is a way for him to unwind while researching, and having the tempting Halle along is definitely a bonus. When she becomes pregnant after they give in to mutual desire, Alastair makes getting married seem like the right choice. But when an unknown culprit causes trouble for her ranch and his business, the couple must stick together or conceivably lose everything.

Often when two people marry, they are truly in love. But the only reason that Halle and Alastair wed is because of their unborn child, making their union more of a business deal at first. Though the pregnancy was certainly not planned, both want to guarantee a secure future for the baby. As days go by and feelings change, this couple soon begin to wonder about how they really want the direction of their marriage to proceed. I liked the spirited Halle and the caring Alastair from the start, and their actions as the story progressed only made them more appealing to me. Their situation is not the best, as they have much to learn about the other, while the problems plaguing each of them only makes adjusting to being wed even harder. With every new incident that occurs, I worried it might be the dilemma which pushed them apart instead of drawing them closer.

With the possibility of a cunning convict still around, the story is packed with questions and few immediate resolutions. Wanting to discover the many secrets in the story kept me reading, and there are some surprising unexpected twists by the story’s end. Geri Krotow made THE BILLIONAIRE’S COLTON THREAT compelling with mysteries and diverse characters.

Colton K-9 Cop by Addison Fox

The list of mysteries in the latest Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity grows longer and longer as the story progresses, while danger also escalates along with all the uncertainties. Easily read as a standalone, the book is about a woman who is puzzled by all the threats that keep happening in her life. When a police officer and his trusty dog begin to investigate the unexplained events, her reactions to them causes even more confusion.  COLTON K-9 COP is about discovering whether the choices a person makes are for the best, or if they are only adding to the problem. Addison Fox has written a compelling story, where suspense and romance are cleverly entwined.

Even though the Christmas holidays are approaching, Bellamy Reeves is not in a very festive mood this year because her family situation has drastically changed. So instead of shopping on a paid day off, she is diligently working at the pharmaceutical company where she has been an accountant for thirteen rewarding years. Just as Bellamy prepares to leave, an email is received that raises some serious questions about where she works.

After her attempt fails when trying to sort out the matter of the disturbing email, Bellamy’s life takes an unexpected turn, especially when her car blows up and almost kills her. Luckily, Donovan Colton who has a K-9 partner that specializes in locating bombs is nearby and answers the call. The Austin cop and his trusty canine look for clues about whether the former workplace of Bellamy is connected to the danger surrounding her or if there is some other reason. And until he finds conclusive evidence and makes certain all is resolved, Donovan is not going to leave the area.

When I saw the cover of the book, I was thrilled because of my love for dogs, and the story definitely gave me a lot to like. Alex is dependable and smart when working, yet he enjoys a belly rub and plenty of head pats when things are all right. I smiled often while reading about this commendable working animal, as his love for being on the job is very obvious along with his devotion to Donovan. There is a genuine connection between Bellamy and Donovan from the first moment she is in peril, and their bond is intensified because of Alex. While both are caring individuals, they have pushed others away at times, thus causing them to feel alone. I truly liked this couple and wished for them to finally be happy. But first, they have to overcome several major personal issues.

As more and more information is given about what is really going on and who is responsible, I worried about Bellamy and if Donovan could keep her safe. The motivation behind the threats is believable and rather scary because of how many lives could be affected, and I could see this scenario actually occurring as Addison Fox brings realism to these intriguing moments. COLTON K-9 COP has dangerous incidents and heartfelt romantic entanglements.

Touch of Red by Laura Griffin

TOUCH OF RED keeps every thought engaged during the countless riveting scenes. Though the Tracers series is now up to twelve books, the entertainment has not diminished at all, and I actually think this is one the best stories yet. The plot is very gripping with a large number of mysteries to resolve, while various characters have roles that play an important part in what ultimately takes place. I was totally captivated by the opening scene, and my interest never waned until the very last word was read. Laura Griffin has outdone even herself with the cleverly imagined developments in TOUCH OF RED, where each revelation had me reading faster.

The latest case undertaken by Brooke Porter is particularly horrific, but also very frustrating. As a CSI for the Delphi Center, she usually investigates not easily solved crimes, and she is proud of how her assistance often gets needed results. But the unknowns just keep mounting in this case, which only makes Brooke more persistent about uncovering any pertinent facts related to the murder and possibly another person who might have seen what happened.

Since Brooke is aiding the local police, she and detective Sean Byrne end up spending much time together. With his respect for her skills plus being secretly drawn to her, he is glad for the opportunity to work with tempting CSI. even when she seems to be guarded around him. Sean and Brooke share theories and whatever evidence is learned, yet the killer remains unidentified. But as more clues become concrete proof, the danger does not subside but seems to escalate.

Uncertainty, concern, and determination are words that can be used to describe the case which Brooke and Sean are working on plus their potential relationship. Both are very dedicated when it comes to finding answers in order for victims to have justice, and she is particularly involved this time. I often worried when she took a chance, as nothing was going to stop her from tracking down a fact. The discussions Brooke has with Sean about her behavior really affected me, as their reactions are backed by such genuine feelings. Regardless of what these two were doing when they interacted, the moment was so true-to-life. Their personal conversations were filled with insight and compassion, while sex between them was steamy yet filled with caring tenderness. Sean certainly demonstrated over and over again that he is an honorable man whom any woman would be lucky to have in her life.

What is actually going on when it comes to the murder is not only fascinating but absolutely engrossing. Laura Griffin excels at getting the details correct, and anything connected to the investigation felt very accurate. There were a few times when I needed to stop reading, but I just could not find a place to take even a short break. When an author can keep me this immersed in a story, then her skill as an outstanding writer is definitely proven. I can only hope this series has many more releases.

Mission: Colton Justice by Jennifer Morey

In the latest book of the Coltons of Shadow Creek miniseries, emotions run high while threats keep escalating. What might have been an intentional death also becomes more complicated as further evidence comes to light, and I often never knew what direction the story was going to take. Jennifer Morey makes her installment captivating with numerous mysteries that need resolving. While subtle clues are given from time to time, nothing is assured until all details are eventually confirmed. MISSION: COLTON JUSTICE intrigues with conflicting emotions and troubling jeopardy.

While going to college for a criminal justice degree, Adeline Winters needed extra money to pay all her bills. Being a surrogate for a childless couple was her choice to bring in more cash, and she now has her own thriving private investigation business. When the father of the child that she carried wants to speak with her, Adeline has no idea as to his reason. It seems Jeremy Kincaid thinks his wife was actually murdered two years ago, not accidentally killed when her car hit a pole.

Though Adeline is unconvinced at first, she does take Jeremy on as a client when he makes a good argument for her looking into whether the supposedly deceased Livia Colton could have had anything to do with the wreck. As facts are gathered and truths come out, it does seem as though something sinister could have occurred. When the wellbeing of the young boy is threatened, Adeline and Jeremy know all their focus must be on recovering him before it is too late.

There is already an emotional bond between Jeremy and Adeline because of how little Jamie came to be born. When they reconnect because of doubts about the death of his wife, it is very difficult for her to ignore the desire to also bond with the child. I could really sense the deep feelings Adeline had for the boy that she gave to two loving parents, yet she tried to make the best of the situation and concentrate on discovering what happened to Jeremy’s wife. He desperately wants to learn what took place when his spouse was out alone, as it has kept him from moving on, whether he admits it or not. Adding to the tension when Adeline and Jeremy are together is the sexual awareness each has of the other, and keeping it under control is not always easy. Jennifer Morey certainly took the couple on an emotional journey as they worked to uncover the truth.

MISSION: COLTON JUSTICE had me constantly changing my mind as to what was going on in the present along with what transpired in the past. As Adeline investigates, shocking information is unearthed, and I was definitely stunned by some of the news. Several suspenseful events had me wondering how everything was going to turn out. While answers pertaining to this story were learned, there is still a big question to be explored in a future book of the Coltons of Shadow Creek miniseries.

Navy SEAL Protector by Bonnie Vanak

Puzzling threats and a reunited couple make the latest SOS Agency story intriguing because of numerous uncertainties. Who is trying to cause all types of damage at a ranch is unknown, and each new development just seems to bring more danger. A man and woman who knew each other for years are brought back together because of a death. Even though old hurts resurface, the two must work closely or much in their lives could be lost forever. NAVY SEAL PROTECTOR is filled with mysteries and heartfelt emotional issues. Bonnie Vanak cleverly entwines unexpected suspense with a touching romance.

After her father becomes an employee on the Belle Creek ranch in Tennessee, Shelby Stillwater felt like she finally had an actual home. Now that the man who owns the property has died, she worries that the place may be sold, which would mean losing her apartment plus the job as its bookkeeper. She then starts getting notes stating she needs to leave the ranch, yet Shelby does not tell anyone because of feared repercussions.

When Nick Anderson returns for his father’s funeral, he is once again back in Shelby’s life. A broken heart back in high school taught her it would be best to avoid him now, but the former SEAL is staying on the same property as her while he decides what to do with the ranch which was part of his inheritance. The thought of seeing Nick every day does not make Shelby happy, though the capable soldier might be able to fix the many troubles Belle Creek is facing.

There is one hardship after another for Nick and Shelby to triumph over in the story, and I repeatedly did not see a way to them to come out the winner on several occasions. Since the danger in the threats also keeps escalating, I feared for their safety and worried great harm might happen to them. Neither Nick nor Shelby are individuals who give up without doing all they can to reach a goal. I really liked how she pushed him to be a better man, even when childhood doubts had him questioning his actions. She frequently has to overlook the town gossips because of her parents, and I could envision such situations taking place in a small town. Bonnie Vanak brings realism into NAVY SEAL PROTECTOR, where hopeful dreams might actually occur if only chances are taken. Since Nick and Shelby often interacted when younger, they know much about each other. I enjoyed their reminiscing about the past, and watching them explore buried feelings as adults.

With the list of suspects who want Nick to sell the ranch growing, I never knew for certain who was actually responsible until the frightening conclusion. The author definitely made a couple scenes exciting because possible scenarios are very perilous. I really like stories where a couple get the opportunity to be in a relationship after previously missing out on the chance, and when some suspense is added into the mix, then I am even happier.

The Agent’s Covert Affair by Karen Anders

Danger happens immediately in the latest To Protect and Serve story, and the peril only intensifies with each new threat. The baby of an injured naval employee is missing, and NCIS is working the case. When the sister of the woman insists on being included in the investigation, agent Derrick Gunn thinks she will only be a hindrance. But Emma St. John proves her worth time and again, and this causes admiration which leads to unexpected feelings. When circumstances turn perilous, keeping each other alive becomes almost as important as finding the child. THE AGENT’S COVERT AFFAIR has risk-filled adventures and an emotional romance. Karen Anders does not disappoint when it comes to romantic suspense, as situations are realistic while characters are engaging.

Though Derrick Gunn has been on a NCIS team for three years, he still likes to work on his own since that is how he previously operated with another government agency. But when a JAG lawyer is seriously hurt and her young child is taken, he reluctantly agrees to let the woman’s sister assist in order to learn what happened because time is crucial. Emma St. John is a private investigator, and Derrick quickly learns she is very capable when it comes to tracking down evidence plus taking care of herself.

Any time he is on a case, Derrick never lets it become personal. Yet being around Emma plus trying to locate her nephew has him feeling emotions that should not surface. When facts seem to point toward a large drug cartel being involved in the baby’s disappearance, Derrick and Emma must fight the strong attraction between them while preparing to battle ruthless men who do not like to lose.

The threats in THE AGENT’S COVERT AFFAIR grabbed me from the start, and my apprehension over what would take place next kept increasing because so much is uncertain. At the start of the book, whoever is behind the abduction is not known, and even when the culprit is learned, there are still facts to uncover. As the risks escalate and physical harm is a definite possibility, Derrick and Emma find themselves bonding with each other, something they rarely do because past experiences have made them not work well with others. Insight into the reason for each of their reactions let me come to understand what currently motivated them, like seeking justice for those who have been wronged. Though they try to resist the pull between them, the desire they feel can be overwhelming.

Suspenseful situations can occur at any time without warning. One of the reasons I enjoy the To Protect and Serve stories so much is that I never know what will happen or to whom. There are plenty of characters with bad intentions in this book, and I certainly enjoyed seeing if the good guys would win or fail when they tangled with someone who had an opposite goal. Although the story is part of a miniseries, the book stands alone since the case is not connected to any prior plots.
