Cowboy by Zoe Dawson

Since the first time I met the SEAL known as “Cowboy”, his thoughts concerning a woman back in his hometown captured my attention. Though there was never a relationship between the distinctly different couple, plenty of fantasies have been envisioned since they last saw each other. In the third book of the SEAL Team Alpha series, most of the danger and intrigue takes place in the United States. But that does not mean there is a lack of suspenseful action or emotional issues to resolve. Zoe Dawson once again expertly interweaves threatening developments with a heartfelt romance, and COWBOY is often moving yet also frequently gripping because of unanticipated peril.

After the circumstances of how his father died led to his family losing their ranch, Wes “Cowboy” McGraw left Reddick and dedicated his life to becoming a capable SEAL. Following another successful mission, he is going back home to see his relatives during his leave and will even attend his high school reunion. Though numerous bad memories keep resurfacing, there is one good thing Cowboy fondly remembers about his Texas town, and he sure hopes to run into Kia Silverbrook while there.

Back in high school, many saw Kia as someone rather odd, and she still loves her goth look. A good hacker for years, she now even makes money doing legitimate work for clients. Kia and Cowboy make contact shortly after he arrives, and both keep picturing some of their long-time fantasies coming true. But when it is apparent someone is out to harm her, she wonders what could be the cause of the threats against her. Having her very own SEAL around just might come in handy in more ways than one.

Military themed stories are a favorite of mine, and Zoe Dawson has certainly created riveting stories for her SEAL Team Alpha series. Regardless of where problems are taking place, the situations that the team tackles are realistic incidents which could actually occur. Sometimes the predicament is personal and other times the dilemma could affect countless people, but these courageous soldiers give it their all every time. Kia finds herself mixed up in a couple of problems, and trying to solve them brings all kinds of risks into her life. She has always kept her thoughts hidden inside and became an independent woman because of her childhood. But what is currently happening to her is definitely much easier when a SEAL comes into her life. COWBOY drew me in because of the danger, while the emotional scenes had me connecting with the characters.

Though Kia and Cowboy noticed the other in high school, neither tried to get closer in any way. Surprisingly, this attraction has lasted over the years that they were separated, and being together now only increases their awareness. While they do not want to become emotionally involved with someone, the pull between them overrides any of their reasons and results in lots of steamy sex. As beliefs are confronted, they must face several challenges which could significantly test their relationship. All the teammates are featured at some point in the story, and I especially enjoyed getting an extra glimpse of Tank whose story is next. There is also a variety of animals in the book, and I smiled quite a few times because of their animated antics.

Runaway Heiress by Jennifer Morey

The latest Cold Case Detectives story has one of the people who work for Dark Alley Investigations researching a murder that a client wants resolved. Jasper Roesch is a former police officer, and he is very good at his current job. But as he talks with the individual who wants answers, he senses Sadie Moreno is not disclosing all she knows. As he tries to find any relevant information, his personal feelings get involved and making certain she stays safe becomes a priority. Jennifer Morey has lots of mysteries in her story, and I was intrigued with each new detail that was learned. Suspense builds in RUNAWAY HEIRESS because of the huge number of unknowns.

Although Sadie Moreno is the heir of her very wealthy father, she finally had enough of his callous behavior and quit following his demands. Much of her time now is dedicated to helping the homeless, and she has even started a center to assist them in having a better life. Sadly, one of the men whom Sadie aided was murdered by an undetermined person, and she is determined to find his killer.

But on her way to hire Dark Alley Investigations in order to hopefully solve the case, she is shot. Jasper Roesch works for the company, and he is put in charge of keeping Sadie from further harm plus learn who killed the man that she befriended. When it becomes apparent the person intent on coming after her is not giving up, Jasper devises a solution which should keep her protected. As the two grow closer while hiding, facts each are keeping from the other could affect their futures.

With numerous facts in RUNAWAY HEIRESS remaining hidden at first, I kept speculating about what was really happening plus who was the culprit behind any wrongdoings. Jennifer Morey definitely had me guessing as to what Sadie was keeping concealed about herself, and I was very surprised when all is eventually revealed. The author certainly built up the suspense about her heroine’s puzzling life, and it was fun trying to predict how all aspects would turn out. Since there is someone who wants to hurt Sadie, threats could occur at any time regardless of what she doing. This opportunity for unforeseen danger to take place makes the story more gripping.

Jasper is a competent investigator for the agency, but he does have some personal issues to overcome, just like Sadie. They each have doubts caused by past experiences that will not go away easily, and these misgivings make their relationships have plenty of ups and downs. A few unexpected turns add new complications to their lives, and wanting to discover how things would work out kept me reading. Another compelling installment to the Cold Case Detectives miniseries.

Cover of Night by Laura Griffin

Once again, a SEAL team faces danger and puts their own lives on the line to save other people from harm. The Alpha Crew series is about a group of men who are tough and ready to tackle any risks, and when a member encounters a particular woman, his protective instincts are often all about her. I have always enjoyed reading about these courageous individuals and the women who come to love them, and this novella series has plenty of suspense and romance to keep me entertained. COVER OF NIGHT by the talented Laura Griffin has frightening scenarios that are realistically depicted with lots of danger and genuine emotions.

When the magazine where Karly Bonham is employed decides to send her to Thailand, she hopes writing an article on the U.S. ambassador to that country will hopefully showcase her talent. All goes well and her assignment is coming to an end, then her last day turns deadly when men use force to take over the resort where she is staying. Now Karly must do whatever she can to stay alive.

After hearing an unknown number of hostages are being held by terrorists, Alpha Crew members are sent to the area. While the SEAL team is gathering intel on the situation, Ethan Dunn comes across Karly who so far has avoided any of the men carrying guns. When he tries to send her away for her own protection, she insists on staying and giving the SEALs needed information. Though Ethan does not like agreeing to her offer, the needs of the other hostages outweigh those of Karly because there is little time left to make a final choice on how they proceed.

While the storyline does not give in-depth details because of the book’s shorter length, there is still enough information conveyed to let me know what is going on and why. Terrorists are threatening people at a resort, and there is no time to wait or more lives could be lost. Ethan and his team members must act swiftly, and Karly becomes caught up in their mission because of her resourcefulness. I liked her determination to carry on even though she was actually scared. The author shows Karly as being vulnerable, yet her sharp mind never stops working on a solution to keep her and others safe all throughout the story. Ethan has dedicated his life to making sure those who would hurt someone never get the chance to carry out their goal. As crucial decisions are made, regardless of where the action is taking place, the suspense of what will eventually happen keeps building. The romance between Karly and Ethan is at first based on desire because of emotional situations that they experienced together. But lingering thoughts of each other turn their attraction into more than something momentary. The author shows their connection is more than sexual, especially in how much Ethan cares about Karly’s welfare. COVER OF NIGHT interweaves perilous escapades with unexpected love.

Capturing a Colton by C.J. Miller

Many of the dramatic developments in the previous Coltons of Shadow Creek stories led to quite a few of the happenings that take place in this story. Some of the incidents are frightening while others are very joyous occasions, and every one of them let me know more about the Colton siblings and those who are now closely connected to them. C.J. Miller cleverly interweaves all the events to create a story filled with surprises. CAPTURING A COLTON enthralls with unexpected incidents and interesting family dynamics.

When his foster sister gets engaged to a Colton and a party celebrates the occasion, there is no way Declan Sinclair could avoid coming in contact with the adult children of Livia Colton. Though he does not really know any of them, their being related to the woman who caused his own family much suffering makes him want to avoid them if possible. Yet there is something about Jade Colton who owns the property where the festivities are taking place which fascinates him.

Since Declan, who is a realtor, has bought the Colton homestead in Shadow Creek, he is staying in the area while some decisions are being made about the house and acreage. He also takes time to visit Jade, and discovers how dedicated she is to helping Thoroughbreds that were once connected to racing and now need new homes. While talking with her, Declan comes to understand just how much she is still affected by the terrible deeds committed by her mother. Especially when there is a chance the escaped criminal could still be in the area and might pose a threat.

From the beginning of the Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity series, I have been captivated with the very complicated link between the six Colton children. Though not all have blood ties, this fact does not keep them from supporting each other when it really counts. They have certainly endured some troubling times in their pasts, but it has not kept them from moving forward and making their lives positive. I really liked how the sixth story brought some closure to different aspects of the ongoing plots, yet left one question open so the miniseries can continue.

C.J. Miller was tasked with showing how all the past couples are now doing, while also telling about Declan and Jade’s budding relationship. Though Declan has valid reasons for not liking the Coltons, he can comprehend the behavior of a person is what counts, not their ties to someone else as many of the townsfolk do. Both he and Jade are repeatedly supportive of the other, yet there were a few times when I nervously waited to see how several of their discussions would turn out because of their current inner feelings. Whether a normally concealed fact was being revealed by Declan or Jade, or if they were divulging a secret wish, I wanted this couple to find the happiness that all her siblings had found. Livia Colton has turned many lives upside-down, and the cunning woman has certainly been hard to catch. What happens in CAPTURING A COLTON is definitely intriguing.

Kid Chaos by Zoe Dawson

Danger keeps escalating in the second SEAL Team Alpha story, while romantic entanglements unexpectedly come into the lives of two focused individuals. The backgrounds of Ashe Wilder and Paige Sinclair are complex, and both have chosen risky careers. Neither is looking for anything permanent when they meet, as she is on an important assignment while he needs to unwind. But they have dedicated their lives to helping others, so when threats increase, they are ready to put themselves in jeopardy to make certain good wins over evil. Zoe Dawson makes her stories about SEALs and the women who come to love them captivatingly believable at all times. I never knew what would happen next, but I did know that it would be imaginative with lots of detail. KID CHAOS is highly entertaining with dangerous exploits and scorching passion.

While he was deployed on a long secret mission, the girlfriend of Ashe Wilder found someone new because the Navy SEAL was constantly gone. So when the soldier known as Kid Chaos returns to the states, he learns their relationship is over. The next time he gets some time off, he decides to do some bike riding in the Andes mountains of Bolivia. Ashe uses a tour company in the country to set up his excursion, and he is ready for some high-energy outings.

The woman who checks him in is actually a NCIS agent covertly working to discover if weapons stolen in the U.S. have ended up in this region plus learn of anyone linked to the theft. When Paige Sinclair meets a new client, there is a potent attraction between them. Though she realizes her full concentration needs to be on the assignment, she sure would like to enjoy a brief fling with the tempting man. When an incident reveals their true identities, Ashe is ready to assist Paige regardless of whatever challenge arises.

Easily a standalone story because of thorough explanations, KID CHAOS begins where the first book in the series ended. The camaraderie amongst the elite group of SEALs is very evident, as their bond is shown with friendly putdowns and loyalty. They work very well when on a mission, as each person understands their responsibility. Military stories are always a favorite, and Zoe Dawson knows how to make these courageous individuals come across as admirable and certainly genuine. Whether they are fighting an enemy or providing companionship for their fellow soldiers, their responses are realistic.

Getting to know Ashe was especially enjoyable, as he has the most outgoing personality. From comments to actions, this lively man had me feeling a connection and wanting him to find someone special. While he may appear to be in good spirits, inside he feels the loss of past relationships. Paige has never taken the time to get really close to a man, as she had other duties which seemed more crucial. But after coming in contact with Ashe, she starts to question much about her life, just as he comes to do, too. I definitely liked how Ms. Dawson made her romantic couple tough when needed, yet also vulnerable to real life experiences. The story has several hints about the next book, and it also appears the SEAL team has more perilous future missions.

Rescued by the Billionaire CEO By Amelia Autin

Intensely emotional scenes can be found all throughout the latest Man on a Mission story, and Amelia Autin makes each situation highly realistic. This author is known for creating stories which are very convincing because of how believable each development comes across, and I was totally caught up in uncovering what would ultimately happen in the lives of her newest romantic couple. There are a large number of touching discussions and honest feelings depicted in the book, and unexpected threats are perfectly interwoven into the compelling love story. RESCUED BY THE BILLIONAIRE CEO is a gripping novel of emotional realism and frightening danger.

After making a career change to work as the assistant to an actor, Alana Richardson moves to Hong Kong and hopes she made the right decision. What she did not expect was to be snatched off the street by ruthless assailants and taken to an unknown location. Her future looks dire until a man manages to get her safely away from the area. Alana has no idea who he is, but she is certainly thankful yet also curious.

Though Jason Moore owns a successful electronics company in Hong Kong, his actions with another venture called Right Makes Might actually bring him even more satisfaction. It does not take Alana long to deduce who her savior is because of a connection with her employer, and she admires his willingness to carry out covert missions to help those in danger. While Jason believes it would be better for him to ignore the potent pull between him and Alana, he decides discovering if their attraction could lead anywhere is worth the risk.

I know a story written by Amelia Autin will completely hold my interest on every page, and RESCUED BY THE BILLIONAIRE CEO proves this fact again and again. Jason and Alana are a couple whose personal problems could certainly exist, and any reactions to difficulties that arise are also very imaginable. Their sentiments range from painful memories to overwhelming joy to angry outbursts, and I felt as though each response was spot-on for the circumstances taking place. During heartfelt conversations, I was profoundly affected by either what Alana or Jason said. Then there are the instances where these two divulged their innermost feelings in thoughts which contained much sincerity.

While Alana tries to be truthful when she talks with Jason, he does keep some parts of his life a secret because he does not want to influence her opinion about him. There is also a part of his past that still affects him as an adult, and the skillful writing of Ms. Autin had me experiencing much empathy for him.  Alana is definitely a compassionate person, and her ease in making others feel better had me respecting this amazing woman. The relationship of these two is filled with many ups and downs, where passion is particularly genuine and feelings can be candidly frank or left unspoken. Any dangerous aspects are all too real, and wanting to know how everything would end kept me reading. The Hong Kong setting is very colorfully described, and I often felt as though I was right there with the characters. Several individuals from past stories are featured from time to time, but enough is revealed about them to make this story a standalone.

Her Lieutenant Protector by Lara Lacombe

Perilous danger is cleverly entwined with a very moving love story, making the third book in the Doctors in Danger miniseries riveting from beginning to end. I was instantly caught up in what was secretly occurring on the cruise ship, and the more I learned, the more I worried over the final outcome if the frightening plot was successful. In today’s society, terrorists come in many forms and have various beliefs, so the premise of the story is definitely conceivable. The heartbreaks suffered by the two main characters all too often happen to good people, and the author had me experiencing the many highs and lows of this couple with much believability. Lara Lacombe has written scenarios that are chillingly realistic, causing HER LIEUTENANT PROTECTOR to be enthralling all the way through.

Being chosen as the chief medical doctor on a new cruise ship is a great career move for Mallory Watkins, and she feels that her life is back on track after a distressing event took place several years ago. Determined to put the tragedy behind her, she looks forward to the day when her mistrust of men will be overcome and dating is once more enjoyable. Before the ship sets sail, Everest LeBeau introduces himself to her as the head of security. Though Mallory seems friendly enough, there is something about her cautious glances that makes the former soldier interested in uncovering the reason.

When Mallory begins to feel comfortable anytime Everest is around, she is surprised by her reaction. But before she can discover what the significance of her response to him means, passengers on the east coast cruise began to fall ill and the possible cause of the sickness could be alarming. As Everest and Mallory work together in trying to expose who is behind the sinister plot, they find relying on one another brings them closer.

Since I have had the pleasure of being on a cruise ship before, the situation envisioned by Lara Lacombe is absolutely terrifying. I can only hope this story written with lots of realism never comes true, but it certainly made for a gripping story with all its possibilities. From unanticipated incidents to sinister thoughts, I often expected the worst to take place while hoping for things to end well. Ms. Lacombe kept escalating the threats, which made me read the story in one setting as I just had to know what would be the resulting consequences.

HER LIEUTENANT PROTECTOR is emotionally stirring. Whether there will be a relationship between Mallory and Everest is a big question in the story, and the author puts many bumps in their road to ever being truly happy. Both have lived through painful episodes in their lives, and their compassionate natures are very evident when truths are revealed. Doubts have kept them from getting personally intimate with anyone in a long time, and Ms. Lacombe has created several scenes where their conversations are very touching, while their actions often speak loudly about their personalities. I was genuinely moved by the sincere honesty depicted by Mallory and Everest, and this made their romantic story even more satisfying. Also, the two previous couples in the miniseries make an appearance, and it was great catching up with these four delightful individuals.

Ruckus by Zoe Dawson

A favorite theme in suspenseful romances is for the heroine to be stranded with the hero in precarious circumstances, and Zoe Dawson brings this scenario to life with ever-increasing peril and a spirited couple. Danger can crop up at any moment in RUCKUS, and I never knew what the outcome would be or if someone would be harmed. Situations could escalate in a second, going from calm and nonviolent to terrifyingly perilous in an instant. My heart raced at times when physical threats loomed, while other incidents made me warm because of all the sexual heat generated by the main couple. Zoe Dawson captured my full attention all the way through the book, as action is swift and desire is expressed with honest feelings.

The latest assignment photojournalist Dana Sorenson has undertaken is very personal to her, and she plans to tell the plight of migrants traveling through the country of Columbia. Though the task will most definitely be risky, she will not let anything keep her from reporting on the trials of these determined people. All seems to be going well for Dana until she is kidnapped by a ruthless criminal in the area.

When Lt. Bowie “Ruckus” Cooper is given his latest duty as a SEAL, he expects the mission to retrieve a drug runner living in a South American jungle to go as planned. Unfortunately, there is an unforeseen dilemma when an American reporter is discovered on the premises, and the SEALs must make certain she and those with her are rescued. But in the haste to escape the compound, Ruckus and Dana end up on their own. With the original mission still needing to be completed, working together to reach their own goals will not be without complications for these two strong-willed individuals.

SEAL Team Alpha is a series that has lots of danger associated with a soldier being in a unit where risks are the norm when on an assignment. Ruckus is proud to serve his country, and doing his duty has always been a top priority to him. But upon meeting Dana, his goals are not always clear. She keeps him confused, yet he is also happy in a way that is not usual for him. Becoming entangled with a cranky SEAL is not what Dana planned to do, but occasionally fate has other ideas. I thoroughly enjoyed watching these two interact, as their opinions gradually change from irritated to admiration. They both do plenty of soul-searching as their time together makes them see things differently, and I worried over what they would ultimately decide. Passion sometimes runs high, and Ruckus and Dana know how to make every minute count when control is lost. They both have some great amusing comebacks, too. RUCKUS is highly entertaining on every page.

As the story progressed, I got small glimpses into the lives of other SEAL team members. When facing a threat, these men know what to do and work exceedingly well together. During downtime, their banter is humorous and made me smile. Zoe Dawson had me believing all the facts about their missions, as actions and words came across as very authentic. I also felt as though I was right there in the jungle, as the author’s descriptive words are colorfully vivid. I am glad there are more books in the series, and I really hope each of the courageous men get to tell their own story.

Escorted by the Ranger by C.J. Miller

C.J. Miller packs her latest romantic suspense story with numerous dilemmas, as a well-known model fears for her life while the bodyguard protecting her must find the culprit plus battle his attraction to her. Uncertainties and mounting desire make life rather stressful for these two individuals, and the couple often must make a decision in a split second or a threat could become deadly. I never knew when something perilous would place the heroine in harm’s way, but it was easy to comprehend that the hero would do his best to keep her alive and well. I really enjoy when a story keeps me guessing all throughout the book, and if any revelations take me by surprise, then I am even more thrilled. ESCORTED BY THE RANGER intrigues with a wide range of unknowns.

Being a model for fifteen years has been very gratifying for Marissa Walker, and she has earned the respect of those with whom she works. But during her most recent runway show, another model is killed by an unidentified person. Unfortunately, the two women share a painful past history, and this fact has the police asking lots of questions before Marissa can be cleared as a suspect.

Since the reason for her friend being murdered is not known, a man associated with her sister will watch over Marissa until the facts are uncovered, just in case she is also in danger. Jack Larson actually works for the West Company, a secretive spy organization, and his skills as a former special forces solider might come in handy. When Marissa is threatened shortly thereafter, her new protector does not hesitate in keeping her safe. Neither is looking to be in a new relationship, but spending time together has Jack understanding the woman under his care is much more than a supermodel.

The fashionable world of modeling is portrayed with much believability, as a day of shooting takes place or a party afterward is held. But there can also be a darker side when jealousy is evident and hurtful words are spoken. I could just see someone speaking as a few did to Marissa, making me realize having a career where a person is famous is not always pleasant. Though the supermodel could have become snobby and disdainful, she tried to be polite to anyone with whom she came in contact, regardless of their interaction.

ESCORTED BY THE RANGER has heartfelt emotions along with unanticipated jeopardy. Danger may have brought Marissa and Jack together, but it was genuine feelings that made their relationship develop into more than just professional. Both have bad experiences in their past when it comes to the opposite sex, and how they react to each other is often with misgivings because of doubts that they just cannot ignore. Jack knows he should pay no attention to how much he desires Marissa, but being with her every hour of the day is more temptation than he can resist. Responses are honest, and I enjoyed watching them explore what was between them. With the possibility of a threat arising constantly being on their minds, these two have much to ponder at all times. Another compelling story from C.J. Miller.

Cold Case Colton by Addison Fox

The Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity series is about the six children of a convicted criminal, a woman who is now a fugitive yet still manages to greatly affect their lives. In the fourth book, subtle threats gradually escalate to one of the daughters, but the person behind the intimidations is not known. Addison Fox interweaves an unexpected romance between two people as they search for any clues about whoever is responsible, and the couple must also contemplate the direction they want to see their futures go. COLD CASE COLTON has touching emotional moments and increasingly scary peril.

After leaving New York and returning to Shadow Creek, Texas, the town where she grew up, Claudia Colton is enthusiastic about operating a boutique which features many of her own clothing designs. Having many brothers and sisters nearby is really wonderful, but unfortunately her mother’s criminal deeds in the past are still the cause of much gossip. Claudia plans to ignore all the talk about her family and make her shop successful. But when a man with a specific agenda arrives in Shadow Creek, she is told some unsettling news which may change her life.

Many of the cases worked on by private investigator Hawk Huntley are often older ones that were never resolved, and he feels rewarded when those left behind find peace because of the answers he uncovers. When he tells Claudia about the potential circumstances of her birth, she is stunned and cannot believe his assumptions are true. Yet if he is correct, then it means she is not the daughter of a woman who has escaped from prison. As facts are sought and truths are gradually revealed, Hawk begins to see Claudia as more than someone involved in his latest case.

One aspect that I like about COLD CASE COLTON is not knowing at first who is threatening Claudia. It could be her escaped mother, someone associated with her parent, or even another individual whose motives have not yet been unearthed. There are a few hints scattered throughout the book, which kept me guessing the identity of the troublemaker and if there was a link to the mother. Addison Fox had me feeling a sense of foreboding as the story progressed, and my fear for Claudia only grew with each new incident. How the author tied this novel with the previous three releases is skillfully handled, and all played out with believability.

While there is mounting danger to Claudia from an unknown source, there is also a very real emotional risk to her because of the news that Hawk divulges. Whether she is really a Colton by birth or not made the story even more enthralling, and I eagerly anticipated the disclosure. The relationship of Hawk and Claudia is realistic, as they explore very genuine feelings between them. Their conversations are especially convincing, and their honest remarks made several discussions movingly poignant. Hawk in particular had me wanting to give him a big hug at times. It was delightful getting to revisit with past couples in the series plus observe the two siblings whose stories are to come, and a huge event made things even more fascinating. COLD CASE COLTON is intriguing and emotionally satisfying.
