Cold Case Colton by Addison Fox

The Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity series is about the six children of a convicted criminal, a woman who is now a fugitive yet still manages to greatly affect their lives. In the fourth book, subtle threats gradually escalate to one of the daughters, but the person behind the intimidations is not known. Addison Fox interweaves an unexpected romance between two people as they search for any clues about whoever is responsible, and the couple must also contemplate the direction they want to see their futures go. COLD CASE COLTON has touching emotional moments and increasingly scary peril.

After leaving New York and returning to Shadow Creek, Texas, the town where she grew up, Claudia Colton is enthusiastic about operating a boutique which features many of her own clothing designs. Having many brothers and sisters nearby is really wonderful, but unfortunately her mother’s criminal deeds in the past are still the cause of much gossip. Claudia plans to ignore all the talk about her family and make her shop successful. But when a man with a specific agenda arrives in Shadow Creek, she is told some unsettling news which may change her life.

Many of the cases worked on by private investigator Hawk Huntley are often older ones that were never resolved, and he feels rewarded when those left behind find peace because of the answers he uncovers. When he tells Claudia about the potential circumstances of her birth, she is stunned and cannot believe his assumptions are true. Yet if he is correct, then it means she is not the daughter of a woman who has escaped from prison. As facts are sought and truths are gradually revealed, Hawk begins to see Claudia as more than someone involved in his latest case.

One aspect that I like about COLD CASE COLTON is not knowing at first who is threatening Claudia. It could be her escaped mother, someone associated with her parent, or even another individual whose motives have not yet been unearthed. There are a few hints scattered throughout the book, which kept me guessing the identity of the troublemaker and if there was a link to the mother. Addison Fox had me feeling a sense of foreboding as the story progressed, and my fear for Claudia only grew with each new incident. How the author tied this novel with the previous three releases is skillfully handled, and all played out with believability.

While there is mounting danger to Claudia from an unknown source, there is also a very real emotional risk to her because of the news that Hawk divulges. Whether she is really a Colton by birth or not made the story even more enthralling, and I eagerly anticipated the disclosure. The relationship of Hawk and Claudia is realistic, as they explore very genuine feelings between them. Their conversations are especially convincing, and their honest remarks made several discussions movingly poignant. Hawk in particular had me wanting to give him a big hug at times. It was delightful getting to revisit with past couples in the series plus observe the two siblings whose stories are to come, and a huge event made things even more fascinating. COLD CASE COLTON is intriguing and emotionally satisfying.

The Darkest Corner by Liliana Hart

The premise of the Gravediggers series is very original, and the first book gives lots of information on what type of assignments are carried out by the secret group known by this name. The way in which an individual becomes a member is definitely unique, too, where courage and risk collide. I became immersed in the storyline from the start, and I kept reading to discover what this elite bunch of men would eventually have to do. I have heard good things about the suspenseful stories written by Liliana Hart, and THE DARKEST CORNER is entertaining with thrilling expectations.

For twelve years, Deacon Tucker had served his country and much of the time was spent doing covert ops. Then his life totally changed when he was recruited by a group known as the Gravediggers. He now completes assignments that require secrecy and are always dangerous. Since no one realizes he is still alive because of an elaborate deception, Deacon can take part in missions without having to worry if anyone will miss him in case the task goes south.

When after graduating from college, Tess Sherman came back to live in Last Stop, Texas and ended up working for a local funeral home since she had studied to be a mortician. Her current boss made huge changes when the business was bought, and there are now five men employed as assistants. One of them is Deacon, and Tess has noticed the mysterious yet very tempting man more than once. She has no idea what he really does, and he knows she must never be aware of the actual work he covertly undertakes. Then complications arise one day which are linked to his hidden employment.

Any time a group of alpha men get together, there is usually plenty of mocking and trying to prove who is better. Deacon and his fellow teammates can always come up with something sarcastic to say, but each one would stand by the other when needed. Since the men are from all over the world, there is even more variety to the humor, and I found myself laughing at some of their “manly” comments. What this group could actually have to face is terrifying, and after the especially frightening prologue, I was anxious to see how everything would conclude. Liliana Hart’s vivid descriptions give a realistic sense of every detail, and many times I felt as though I was right there beside Deacon and Tess.

While much of the story concentrates on a complicated plot by terrorists, there are also many moments connected to the budding romance between Tess and Deacon. Though both have noticed the other in a sexual way for a long time, neither made a move until the time was just right. Passionately fiery expresses what happens when they let desire take over, and they are not individuals who hold back. Their emotional bond is evident even when the words have yet to be spoken, and I kept wondering what Tess would do when some very tough choices must be made. Since this is the first book in the series, and numerous explanations were needed to clarify what had happened in the past, I hope to see more action in the next book. THE DARKEST CORNER intrigues with alarming threats and scorching passion.

Pregnant by the Colton Cowboy by Lara Lacombe

The Coltons of Shadow Creek continuity series is about a group of siblings and how the actions of their mother could perhaps bring danger into their lives. In the third book, a man has been deeply affected by circumstances surrounding his birth, and he does not see his life ever improving. But when a chance encounter with a woman has lasting consequences, their lives are forever changed. I found this story to be packed with lots of genuine emotions and unforeseen jeopardy, where a person could be joyously happy one moment and then facing death in the next instant. Lara Lacombe has several harrowing difficulties cropping up in the lives of her main couple, and I never knew how everything would ultimately work out for the likable characters until all was resolved. PREGNANT BY THE COLTON COWBOY has numerous mysteries, tender passion, and heartfelt emotions.

Since his father was much more involved in how Thorne Colton was raised, he became a man with strong convictions and a calm nature. Dating is not a regular pursuit, but that does not keep him from fantasizing about Maggie Lowell, the woman who does his father’s bookkeeping. She also secretly longs to grab his attention, and an unplanned incident lets them fulfill what each had only dreamed about doing. To keep Maggie from being shunned like him, Thorne thinks they should never be in a relationship because of how his mother’s criminal activities have tainted his own life.

When Maggie’s car blows up and she is hurt, it leads to the revelation that she is pregnant. Thorne is stunned to learn he is going to be a dad, but nothing will keep him from watching over the mother of his child and keeping them safe from any further peril. As the days go by with Maggie living at the ranch with him, he wonders if his future could possibly turn out differently than he has always expected.

Although Thorne is a cowboy who works hard and has dedicated much of his life to raising horses, he still has a soft side when it comes to those for whom he cares. I really enjoyed seeing his reactions to learning about his impending fatherhood, and his decisions afterward showed his true personality. A talk with his father is very touching, and any conversations in the story are definitely lifelike. Thorne has a hard time communicating what he actually feels, but his deeds did convey how he felt when the words were not spoken. Maggie is a delight, as she is strong and does not give up easily, even when things seem rather hopeless. I especially liked the scenes where she and Thorne talked about important details, as their inner thoughts and strengths were demonstrated to me.

How the ongoing troubles dealing with mother of Thorne are handled is cleverly portrayed by the author, as Lara Lacombe gave clues but nothing concrete until near the end. I like being given hints as to what is going on, but must keep an open mind as all is not known. PREGNANT BY THE COLTON COWBOY keeps you guessing with realistic and compelling developments. Many of Thorne’s siblings do make an appearance, and I liked knowing what was taking place in the lives of the characters already met as well as those whose stories are yet to come.

The Thief by Michele Hauf

Unique paranormal stories created by Michele Hauf have kept me entertained for years, and I was excited to discover that she had written a suspenseful series. The Elite Crimes Unit solves white-collar offences, and the first book concerns two individuals whose lives take a drastic turn when they end up working together for the good of others. Though both once stole jewelry, neither did it to make a huge profit, and whatever they lifted often ended up helping someone less fortunate. Ms. Hauf always manages to bring her characters to life with distinctive personalities and often nonconforming behavior, and I found her two main characters to definitely be original. THE THIEF is imaginative and packed with surprising incidents.

After Josephine Deveraux gave up her career of being a jewel thief, she came to live in a rural area far away from Paris. Now the current thrill in her life is what vegetables will be ready to pick next. While she may miss the excitement of pulling off a successful heist, the tranquil existence she enjoys on a daily basis is definitely less stressful. When someone breaks into her home and insists she steal a certain object, Josephine realizes the past that she thought was buried has resurfaced.

A quickly made plan to keep from once again becoming a thief does not go as hoped, and she ends up agreeing to snatch a valuable necklace. When Josephine goes to a gala in order to swipe the jewelry, it appears someone else is also after the piece. Xavier Lambert is also a former thief who presently works for the Elite Crimes Unit because he was given little choice after being caught. Now his talent is only used for good. But when there is competition to obtain an extravagant diamond necklace, the stakes of whom will come out on top is significantly raised with each new development.

When I read a story from Michele Hauf, I know there will be lots of amusement sprinkled throughout the many compelling scenes. From bantering comments to comical thoughts, various characters caused me to laugh in THE THIEF, as the author’s unique brand of humor is evident in how they conducted themselves at times. There is an adorable cat which had me smiling, and some bad guys who made me want to boo them, especially when they worked against what Josephine and Xavier wanted. A French setting is enchantingly realistic, whether the story is taking place out in the country or the streets of Paris. Ms. Hauf likes to set a book in this country, and it always amazes me in how she makes locations occurring anywhere in France seem so genuine.

THE THIEF is suspenseful plus emotional. There are several situations that are rather nerve-racking, and I was not exactly sure what would happen to Xavier and Josephine. These two are delightfully fun to watch interact with one another, as it is very difficult for either to trust easily. This makes for plenty of scenes where they disagree and even sometimes argue about a particular detail. While I do not condone thievery, Ms. Hauf had me really liking Josephine and Xavier despite their backgrounds, and I am looking forward to seeing what the next book in the series will involve.

Secret Agent Under Fire by Geri Krotow

With heightened danger and lives on the line, the fourth story in the Silver Valley P.D. miniseries is thrilling plus entertaining. In previous books, a religious cult arrived in a picturesque Pennsylvania town and its members created a variety of problems for the local citizens. So far, the residents in Silver Valley have stopped any of the trouble these fanatics have tried to instigate, but their latest scheme is the most ambitious yet. With the help of an agency called Trail Hikers and a woman who is an arson expert, the once peaceful town will hopefully once again be a great place to live without constant fear. I enjoyed seeing two individuals put aside any differences for the good of others, and the unexpected romance between the couple added lots of interesting developments. SECRET AGENT UNDER FIRE has perilous circumstances interwoven with emotional issues, and Geri Krotow builds the suspense with each new predicament.

When Abigail Redland was ready to leave the FBI, she was not anticipating a new career with the Trail Hikers, a covert government agency. The organization works out of Silver Valley, Pennsylvania, and she is now using her skills as an arson investigator to hopefully discover who is behind the town’s many unsolved fires over the past three months. Unfortunately, it means Abi must come in contact with the local fire chief, and though she and Keith Paruso want the suspect caught, both have their own opinions about how to make it happen.

While keeping the town and its citizens safe is most important to Keith, he also has a personal reason for stopping the arsonist as he still feels the repercussions from a false accusation. When Abi is told to work with the fire chief and combine their information, she is not happy but will do what must be done to bring the criminal to justice. Even if it means being around a man to whom she is attracted. But when the fires head in a deadlier direction, Keith and Abi know time is not on their side.

Relationships can be complicated, and when there are secrets being kept, things often get even more difficult for the two people involved. Abi is under obligation to not tell Keith about her being a Trail Hiker, and she is reluctant to reveal her actual feelings for him, too. Though they are most concerned about uncovering those responsible for setting the fires and always remain dedicated to the task, they cannot keep desire for the other from entering their thoughts from time to time. It was enjoyable watching Keith and Abi together, as they might bicker over a detail or show admiration for the other’s intelligence. There were also some quick-witted comments expressed, and their teasing had me smiling.

Several past characters are featured throughout the book, and it was great seeing what was now going on in their lives. Geri Krotow also includes many specific facts about the story’s setting, making scenes more realistic. The cult now known as New Thought has caused much havoc in Silver Valley for months, and the events that take place in SECRET AGENT UNDER FIRE have the threats intensifying. I never knew what would happen next or who would be affected, and I was kept guessing until the very end.

At Close Range by Laura Griffin

When a book in the Tracers series is read, I am always amazed at how imaginatively the plots are carried out with total convincingness. Though the series is up to eleven books now, the storylines have all been packed with realistic scenarios where I fully believe every situation that crops up. Laura Griffin has created extremely alarming circumstances throughout AT CLOSE RANGE, where every single detail comes across as unnervingly plausible. From the harrowing event at the beginning of the novel to the nail-biting conclusion, there is never a second where my thoughts were not completely consumed by what was happening in the story. The romance between Scott Black and Daniele Harper is one of the most captivating that I have read in a long time, as every aspect of their relationship is truly credible and fueled by honest emotions. I hope the Tracers series never ends, as Laura Griffin can do no wrong when it comes to making fiction seem factual.

Although Daniele Harper has not worked many homicides, circumstances force this police detective to be the head investigator on a case which is very challenging from the beginning. But she will do everything possible to find whoever killed two people in a remote area of her community. Since their town is rather small, they will use a nearby forensics lab because of its vast resources. Dani already knows many employees at the Delphi Center, and she is prepared to work personally with several of them to gather information. But being around the lab’s main firearms specialist is sometimes difficult, as her feelings for Scott Black have not been entirely professional for a long time.

Various items are tested, yet nothing is discovered that helps identify a certain suspect. Scott has known Dani for years, and he has tried to keep any thoughts about his good friend’s sister from being sexual. Though each can tell there is a shared potent attraction which is begging to be explored, neither plans to act on their unspoken desire and just concentrate on the investigation. When the case takes a strange turn, Dani and Scot feel answers must be quickly uncovered or more murders might perhaps occur.

AT CLOSE RANGE is riveting because of unanticipated danger plus a highly enchanting romance. The mystery of whodunit and why only becomes more intriguing as each new fact is revealed, and some of the disclosures were definitely surprising. How the lives of Dani and Scott become entangled in the sinister scheme is cleverly accomplished with plenty of unexpected twists and turns, some which were very original. I like when something unforeseen takes place in a story, and this book is continuously filled with the unpredicted.

Scott is a man whom I would want on my side, as I know he would do anything to keep those for whom he cares safe. He has his own way of doing things, and his methods frequently clash with Dani’s approach. She is more of a rule follower, yet there are numerous instances where personal feelings want to overrule her duty. Candid reactions and sincere comments had me loving this couple from the start, and I became deeply invested in their long-term welfare. Lots of characters from prior books in the series are featured and enhance the story, but each novel stands alone and can be read out of order. Just do not miss any of the Tracers releases.

Her Alpha Marine by Karen Anders

Danger appears almost immediately in the sixth To Protect and Serve book, and threats only become more unpredictable as the story progresses. Neve Michaels is on a Coast Guard search and rescue team, so she often has to take risks to save others. But when her own family is endangered because of something she did, nothing will stop the gutsy woman from protecting them, even at much cost to her. Though she is planning to work alone, one man is not willing to let her life be jeopardized regardless of what she says. Frequently at odds when it comes to decisions, these two individuals will experience a series of events where death could occur in an instant. I worried about their safety so many times, as Karen Anders takes them on a journey packed with unanticipated peril. HER ALPHA MARINE captivates with dangerous adventures and explosive conflicts.

After being injured on a rescue mission, Coast Guard swimmer Neve Michaels is eager to get back to work. While impatiently waiting for her recovery time to be over, she receives a cryptic note and then is physically attacked. During the confrontation, Neve discovers an illegal weapons dealer called White Falcon wants her and anyone close to her to suffer. Unfortunately, her brother’s best friend, Russell “Rock” Kaczewski, knows about the incident, and the former marine is determined to make sure she is protected, even though she insists his assistance is not wanted.

When Neve learns her enemy is possibly somewhere near Panama, she decides to take care of the threat on her own, thus keeping others safe. But Rock is not going to let her prevent him from helping, even if she tries to deceive him. Both are equally unyielding when it comes to reaching their goals, especially Rock as he has strong unspoken feelings for Neve. He is also a man who does not give up easily, even when someone thinks what is being done is for the best.

There is little down time in HER ALPHA MARINE, and I quickly became caught up in the many harrowing situations that Rock and Neve had to face. From the first indication of something being wrong to the last altercation, I was concerned about their future and if they would actually have the chance for a relationship. Their time in the jungle is especially demanding, as they had to fight not only various enemies but the environment as well. A jungle setting is one of my favorite locations for a suspenseful story to take place, and this couple definitely has many issues to overcome. Karen Anders has created a very realistic locale for Rock and Neve to tackle, and I felt as though I was right there with them on numerous occasions.

The couple also had to deal with around-the-clock sexual tension, and the desire each felt for the other was only waiting for one tiny spark to ignite. Rock has hid his feelings for Neve for a long time, and he is secretly ready for a more stable life. She is all about proving herself, and a few of her earlier choices are a little misguided. Yet she does come to realize the value of teamwork, and I liked seeing her work through these inner battles. There are more books coming in the To Protect and Serve miniseries, and I could not be happier.

The Killer You Know by Kimberly Van Meter

Another Kelly brother gets his chance to find happiness, and this time emotional issues plus uncovering the truth are equally challenging. Silas Kelly must confront the demons that have haunted him since the day which forever changed his life, and being in frequent contact with a strong-minded reporter makes his time back home more difficult. Quinn Jackson wants to write an outstanding story and get a better job somewhere else, but clashes with the FBI agent are not making it easy to reach her goal. Toss in lots of secrets plus one shocking revelation after another, and the resulting romantic suspense story by Kimberly Van Meter is very riveting. I was certainly caught up in each new disclosure and was eager for more. THE KILLER YOU KNOW is constantly surprising with unexpected developments.

The brother of Silas Kelly was murdered many years ago, and he has never completely gotten over the tragedy as the killer was never caught. Now a FBI agent who specializes in child abductions, his interest is drawn to a case in his hometown when a teenager is found dead. Upon hearing several facts related to the death are eerily like those of his sibling, Silas wants to discover if there could possibly be any link between the two cases. If so, then he might finally get come closure if this recent murder can be solved.

Being back in the state of Washington is tough on Silas, as so many bad memories resurface. As he tries to find any evidence about what happened to the girl, a local reporter is also looking for any clues. He sees Quinn Jackson as an individual who only thinks about getting a story, and while very motivated, she does try to be compassionate when gathering facts. Since their paths keep crossing, she wants them to exchange information. Though Silas does not trust reporters, he may get more answers working with the assertive woman than going it alone.

Except for when his brother was killed, the town where Silas grew up seems like the same peaceful place that he left long ago. Nothing much has changed, and many folks are still there doing the same things they always did. But his job has made him realize not everyone lets their personal secrets be known, so digging into the lives of people who appear innocent is something he must do, even if it causes resentment or suffering. I really felt for Silas when he had to obtain details from those who were hurting, as it affected him more than it seemed. Quinn does not like being told what to do, and she could blow up very quickly. But at least she could admit to being wrong, and I saw any faults as making her behavior lifelike. The relationship of this couple is often complex, as they are regularly at odds. Yet there is plenty of witty banter between them, and sexual desire is definitely genuine.

THE KILLER YOU KNOW is enthralling all the through. Any time something new is divulged in the story which connects to a murder, I was often stunned because I had not anticipated this particular fact as being true. Kimberly Van Meter scatters cleverly concealed clues throughout the story, and a few of them had me guessing the correct the answer while others only served to keep me baffled until the very end.

Shielded by the Cowboy SEAL by Bonnie Vanak

In the second SOS Agency story, a woman who has been abused by her husband needs help, and the organization run by a good friend’s husband finds her a place to stay while making decisions about her future. This puts two people together that are seeking answers for different problems, and trust needs to be built between them or even more danger may come into her life. From the moment I started reading SHIELDED BY THE COWBOY SEAL, I was totally caught up in the many fascinating events happening to the two main characters, and each episode compelled me to keep reading in order to discover their next adventure. Bonnie Vanak has constructed an extremely gripping story of suspense, where the unexpected occurs without any warning.

Though her marriage had been bad for a long time, an incident made Meg Taylor realize she had to leave Florida and find a solution to the troubling issue that he had caused. After placing a call to a friend, she has arrived in a small town up north where she will be given a place to stay and hopefully will not be found by her rich soon to be ex-husband. Meg will be living on a farm which is owned by the family of Cooper Johnson, and the Navy SEAL will watch over her while home on leave. Although he recently lost his sister when the vest she was wearing did not keep her from being shot when answering a call about a disturbance, he is still willing to put his grief aside when a friend asks for his assistance.

After Cooper meets Meg, he gradually comprehends the woman once living a wealthy lifestyle is not really self-centered like he first thought. He also learns she knows some crucial facts that her husband does not want leaked. When more secrets are exposed, Cooper and Meg must decide on a workable solution, one which could perhaps aid them both.

SHIELDED BY THE COWBOY SEAL increases the suspense with one surprising twist after another. While a couple of developments seemed rather insignificant at the time, I came to understand they played a part in a much bigger scheme. Then there were the situations where a life was actually in danger, and I became very anxious because the outcome was questionable. Some reasons for any trouble are known while others are cleverly divulged as the story progresses. Just when I believed things were finally being figured out in my mind, some new detail was disclosed and I had to change the direction of my thoughts.

Bonnie Vanak has created a story packed with dangerous threats, and interwoven this peril with a very complicated romance. Cooper and Meg have suffered emotional heartache and personal losses, and it is hard for them to think better days will actually materialize. The situations in their lives are depicted with much realism, and I knew there were many obstacles that would keep them from ever being in a relationship unless they became more positive. Cooper is strong when others need him, yet the loss of his sister leaves him feeling like a part of him is missing. Meg has always tried to do what is right, but nothing ever seems to go as planned. The author puts the couple through a series of situations filled with honest reactions, heightened passion, and hopeful dreams before they can ever find lasting happiness.

Reason to Believe by Roxanne St. Claire

The Bullet Catchers series immediately became a favorite from the very first release, and although I read the WHAT YOU CAN’T SEE anthology which included REASON TO BELIEVE several years ago, I enjoyed revisiting two likable characters that are facing much peril. Roxanne St. Claire manages to make her storylines believable at all times, and even the touch of paranormal in this book seems credible, making me consider the possibility of the events actually taking place. REASON TO BELIEVE entwines action, mysteries and passion to create a suspenseful romantic adventure.

Using her psychic capabilities lets Arianna Killian comfort people who have lost someone important to them. She even has her own show on television where a message from the deceased individual can be communicated through her to a person still living. But lately she has been experiencing visions about how someone was killed, yet has no idea whose death she is seeing. Arianna is also receiving some particularly threatening emails. Fear leads her to call The Bullet Catchers, an agency that employs very proficient bodyguards. The man sent to protect her is Chase Ryker, and he will do whatever it takes to keep her safe. But there is no way he will ever be convinced her skills are genuine.

It quickly becomes apparent the mysterious threats do pose a risk to Arianna, and learning the person’s identity from any clues is imperative.  She and Chase become close while checking out possible evidence, and he comes to understand there just might be more to the psychic than he first thought. They soon come to realize any facts Arianna obtains through her visions might get her killed.

When a Bullet Catcher agent skeptical of anything supernatural must protect a TV psychic, keeping things totally professional is not without effort, especially when doubts form. Chase is a rational thinker, where his opinions are based on what he can prove. But from the instant Arianna speaks to him, he scrambles to find a valid explanation for her comments. I delighted in seeing his scientific mind try to make sense of her remarks. Always a competent bodyguard, Chase also tries to concentrate on his duty and ignore how Arianna makes him feel. But her bubbly personality touches something deep within him. Their reactions to each other are fun to watch, as their responses to the many unforeseen situations that arose are not predictable, thus keeping my interest high. REASON TO BELIEVE is definitely entertaining.

Looking for whoever is threatening Arianna in various ways requires gathering the truth about numerous unknown details. As she and Chase investigate, surprises abound as information comes to light. Roxanne St. Claire knows how to captivate the reader and keep guesses coming. If none of The Bullet Catchers stories have ever been read, discovering this one will make you want to know more about the other elite agents working for the organization.
