Wedding Takedown by Geri Krotow

51SWm9EVkNL._SX313_BO1,204,203,200_In the previous book of the Silver Valley P.D. miniseries, political dishonesty concerning certain town leaders was debated, while fears about a cult possibly taking up residence nearby kept rising. In this story, the new mayor appears to be involved in several criminal incidents, and one police detective plus a local florist might be the ones who can prove what is actually happening. Geri Krotow interweaves dangerous escapades with a complex romance, where suspense escalates and hearts are on the line. I definitely did not know what was going to take place on more than one occasion, as peril is often unexpected. WEDDING TAKEDOWN has lots of intrigue plus emotional issues.

Though having to arrange flowers for a last-minute wedding will take plenty of work, Kayla Paruso is confident everything will work out satisfactorily. She just hopes the mayor and especially his wife are also happy with her choices for their daughter’s wedding, because good publicity can help her florist business. While attempting to get ideas on how to decorate a building, Kayla stumbles upon a woman being killed. The first Silver Valley police officer on the scene is Det. Rio Ortego, a man whom she dated not too long ago. Although they seemed to hit it off, their relationship ended because of differences.

The dead woman is the assistant to the mayor, and some Silver Valley citizens think the man is mixed up in illegal dealings. Facts are needed to prove what is going on, and Kayla will be in a position to perhaps hear secrets while working on flowers for the wedding. Though finding information about the mayor plus learning if he might be linked to a nearby cult is crucial, Rio worries Kayla could be putting herself in danger. Keeping residents safe is his duty, but closely watching over the florist is a pleasure.

While reading the first book in the series would fill in much background, Ms. Krotow does give enough information to let the reader know what recently occurred in the area. Silver Valley has always been a community where folks work together, but lately outsiders are doing their best to make things difficult, in particular when it relates to those in authority. I liked watching Rio work hard to prove not all accusations are valid, showing just how dedicated he is to his job. Though Kayla is not trained in law enforcement, she has personal reasons for wanting to make certain those responsible for crimes in Silver Valley are stopped. There are plenty of unknowns that kept me guessing the identity of who is behind a murder and other connected events, and hints along the way gradually exposed the truth. WEDDING TAKEDOWN has numerous mysteries to solve, and their revelations are frequently surprising.

Even though the sexual relationship between Rio and Kayla is extremely satisfying, other aspects do not make her happy and led to their breaking up. I really liked how Rio approached her when they come in contact with one another once again. He states his opinion but is not pushy, and I anxiously waited to see how Kayla would respond. Second chance romances are always enjoyable as sometimes the right choice was not made the first time, and giving a couple one more opportunity to let their hearts decide their fate can be entertaining. When Kayla finds herself in danger, I found her decisions to be lifelike as her survival instincts took over, while Rio becomes protective and very caring. Hope more of the Silver Valley townsfolk get to tell their stories.

Taking Fire by Cindy Gerard

51s3juZoR-L._SY346_There is no way not to become emotionally involved with the main characters in a story by Cindy Gerard as their personalities are so likable, and the romantic couple in her One-Eyed Jacks series is particularly appealing. Linked by troubling past history, Bobby Taggart and Talia Levine are given another chance to learn if their powerful sexual attraction can ever turn into anything more. Secrets and deception may have torn them apart, but an expected opportunity could end years of anguish that both have suffered. Cindy Gerard never fails when it comes to creating commanding heroes and take-charge heroines, where feelings are laid bare and danger is faced without hesitation. TAKING FIRE delivers gripping action along with heartfelt emotions.

His work as a private military contractor had Bobby Taggart in Afghanistan, so spending some downtime with an interesting woman helped to make his nights much more enjoyable. Surprisingly, he starts to have feelings for reporter Talia Levine, but any thoughts about her must not interfere in his latest mission to locate a Hamas terrorist and get information from him. But before Bobby can fully decide how he feels about the fascinating journalist, the man from whom he wants facts is killed and Talia is nowhere to be found. Realizing she has deceived him and was somehow responsible for the death of the terrorist, he is angry yet also hurt.

After six years pass, Bobby has a new career that takes him to an Arab country to check out the security at their U.S. Embassy. When he has to work with their temporary security investigator, he is stunned to see it is Talia. Circumstances quickly toss them together when their lives are in danger, but Bobby certainly does not trust her because of the way they parted. He wants answers, yet definitely does not expect everything he is told. Though he vows to not let Talia affect him again, it is extremely difficult to keep his protective nature under control when one crucial fact is revealed.

Suspenseful stories written by Cindy Gerard always have an abundance of jeopardy plus lots of emotional entanglements. In the fourth One-Eyed Jacks novel, there is equal danger to hearts and physical bodies. I never knew when something might possibly happen to Bobby, Talia or the individuals with whom he works. It was great getting to revisit with so many characters from several series and to see them under various circumstances. How these courageous men and women put their lives on the line for what they think is right deeply touched me, as their actions always seemed so genuine. The camaraderie among these individuals is especially convincing, and many of their comments caused much laughter.

The relationship of Bobby and Talia is certainly complicated. Though it started out as just a good time for him, it swiftly became personal, while she regrets her assignment when his charming personality wins her over. Any pain Bobby feels because of her treachery is clearly depicted with earnest emotions, and I hurt right along with him. How these two are still connected and each of their reactions when all details are finally exposed is very compellingly described. Their feelings are expressed with much honesty, and I anxiously waited to see what they would finally choose to do. The sexual desire between them is powerful, yet there is also caring behind each passionate encounter. Any danger they have to face is realistic, and their responses to these situations prove they are daringly brave. Cindy Gerard can do no wrong when it comes to writing romantic suspense. TAKING FIRE is believable and profoundly emotional.

Colton Baby Homecoming by Lara Lacombe

51rzSTpNQXL._SX313_BO1,204,203,200_There are a wide range of emotions expressed in the third Coltons of Texas story, and each sentiment is greatly affecting. From sorrow to fear to even joy, the feelings of the main couple were very clear to me and often had my own heart racing or being happy right along with them. Lara Lacombe knows exactly how to make her characters come across as actual people, and her contribution to the Coltons of Texas continuity is filled with realistic situations that pulled me into every riveting moment. COLTON BABY HOMECOMING has heartfelt emotions plus compelling mysteries.

After a long day working at his search and rescue job, Ridge Colton is ready for a peaceful evening spent at home with his canine partner. But upon reaching his remote cabin, he is totally stunned to discover someone had placed an infant on his front porch. Though the little girl looks well, Ridge is clueless when it comes to kids. So a trip to the local hospital is in order to let a doctor make certain nothing is wrong. When Dr. Darcy Marrow turns out to be the temporary emergency room physician, Ridge knows his day just got even worse.

Many years ago, Darcy was the only person who did not judge him for having a serial killer father, and he had actually thought there was something special between them. But her family did not approve of their relationship, and an incident caused her to forsake Ridge. Now all he can hope for is that they can at least be civil to each other, and both do make an effort. When circumstances put Ridge and Darcy in danger because an individual wants the infant, he is determined to keep those under his protection safe.

In the previous books of the Coltons of Texas continuity, clues have been given as to the possible identity of the Alphabet Killer but nothing has been proven as yet. Immediately from the start of COLTON BABY HOMECOMING, a new mystery begins and adds more uncertainties to the overworked police force. Finding an abandoned child at his home raises all kinds of questions for Ridge, and though he is not a cop, he is someone who knows how to track down answers. I liked watching him work with his siblings who are in law enforcement, and their jovial banter had me laughing at their good-natured ribbing. A strong sense of family is portrayed throughout the story, and it was good to see after the way their father’s actions forced them apart. Any developments related to the baby are riveting and often very surprising, while hints about the killer are slowly coming to light.

Although it has been many years since Ridge and Darcy have seen each other, neither has forgotten the strong connection they once had. All it takes is one meeting, and regrets plus dreams fill their thoughts. I truly felt for this couple because of the way in which they broke up, and how they currently respond to the other also deeply touched me. The emotions depicted by characters created by Lara Lacombe are always believable, and the reactions of Ridge plus Darcy are particularly convincing. I saw Ridge as someone who unselfishly gave of himself to help people in his town though most residents shunned him, and this fact just made him a better man. His devoted dog, Penny, caused many smiles when she was featured, and I loved the way the two got along. His relationship with Darcy is definitely complicated, and how she spoke her mind had me admiring her determination more than once. COLTON BABY HOMECOMING is packed with dangerous peril and lots of sincere feelings.

Colton’s Surprise Heir by Addison Fox

Colton's SupriseThe Coltons of Texas series has a large family suffering through years of personal torment related to a past tragedy, and none have been more affected than Ethan Colton. Having a father who murdered innocent people would be bad enough, but the cold-blooded man also killed his own wife. Ethan was only seven when he told information that put his dad in prison, and being the son of a killer still influences many of his current choices. Lizzie Conner challenges him from the moment she comes back into his life, and neither are ever the same because of one memorable night. Addison Fox makes her contribution to the Coltons of Texas series not only intriguing but very heartfelt. COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR has numerous mysteries and profound emotional issues.

When Elizabeth Conner came to see Ethan Colton, the Texas rancher definitely did not expect the news his childhood friend delivered. It seems their one passionate night together after meeting at a rodeo resulted in her being pregnant. Though he never wanted to have kids because of his inherited background, it looks like he and Lizzie are going to be parents in three months. Ethan just hopes whatever made his own father a serial killer will not be passed on to the child.

Although Lizzie had not planned to inform Ethan about the baby just yet because she knew his views on having children, some disturbing incidents drove her to seek his assistance for the safety of their baby. Not knowing who is actually behind the threats has her fearful of what might happen next. While Ethan had no desire to ever be a dad, he does not hesitate in taking measures to keep Lizzie and his child from being harmed.

There is a powerful connection between family members in the Coltons of Texas series, and Addison Fox proves this point during several scenes where the love between the siblings comes through loud and clear. I could easily see these discussions taking place, where disagreements are often debated yet backed by much concern. While Ethan had thought he was happy living his solitary life on his successful ranch, the presence of Lizzie makes him realize what he has been missing. I really felt for him and all the problems that he has lived with for so long, especially since he had such a difficult time expressing his real feelings. Lizzie also had much to overcome by growing up without parents, and I respected her ability to be so self-sufficient. These two make a wonderful couple, as the passion and trust between them is honestly genuine.

Who is once again killing people in their town is certainly a big mystery, and I was left baffled though clues are scattered throughout. This is an ongoing subject matter in the series, and it is interesting to see how details are handled in each book. I am very eager to discover what will occur in the upcoming Coltons of Texas story because of facts given in this novel. The possible danger to Lizzie is also mystifying, and I never knew when a threat was going to pop up or how alarming it might be. Danger and emotions are equally balanced in COLTON’S SURPRISE HEIR.
